Compact Recreational Generators
Ranging in weight from 30 to 100-plus pounds, compact recreational generators are ideal as easily transportable, short-term sources of power.
Read More (About Compact Recreational Generators)Compact recreational generators generally range in weight from about 30 pounds to over 100 pounds and can cost anywhere from several hundred dollars to $1,000 or more. While easier to transport than their larger generator counterparts, they’re considered more of a short-term power source than larger portable and home-standby models. Where power output (measured in watts) is concerned, compact recreational models generally offer in the neighborhood of 2,000 watts or greater starting power and 1,500 watts or more rated power.
New and used compact recreational generators are regarded as suitable for camping, recreational vehicle, tailgate, fishing, and other outdoor activities and able to power mobile devices, smaller appliances, televisions, DVD players, coffee pots, and more. Higher-end units may support powering RV air conditioners and larger appliances.
Compact recreational generators typically provide multiple power inputs, including 120V, 12V DC, and 5V USB options. Most models have a 1-gallon fuel tank (give or take), although some integrate slightly larger tanks. While tank size is clearly a factor in power output, models in this category generally support anywhere from 4 to 8 hours or more of operation. Keep in mind, though, that the larger the electrical load, the heavier the impact on runtime.
Most compact recreational generators operate on gas, although some can use either gas or propane. Moving forward, some experts believe tri-fuel models supporting NG (natural gas) will gain traction. Another recent development in the category is the increased availability and popularity of inverter models, which are usually more expensive but considered lighter, much quieter, more efficient, and better performing due to their ability to adjust power up and down to meet current demands vs. operating continually at full power.
In addition to many models sporting wheels to make for easier transport, various features can include recoil and electric starting abilities, sound-reduction systems, low-oil and low-fuel warning and shutdown systems, power meters, power saving or ECO modes, wireless remote abilities, and circuit-protection features. Another notable and increasingly available feature is the ability of compact recreational generators to pair with another generator in order to provide twice the available power.
